Game management confirms that there were no reported casualties after a fire broke out at Game Lakeside Mall in Benoni on 1 June at approximately 4.15 pm.
“Emergency personnel and store management reacted swiftly and thankfully all customers and staff were safely evacuated, although three people who had been inside the Mall at the time were treated on the scene for smoke inhalation. We are relieved to report that they were given the all clear by medics,” says Game spokesperson Brian Leroni.
“We would like to thank emergency services and traffic control personnel, centre management and our own store staff and management for their professional handling of this situation,” says Leroni.
Fire fighters managed to bring the fire under control quickly although they were still damping the area early this morning. The cause of the fire, which has damaged stock and the interior of the store has yet to be established. The value of the stock in the store is estimated at approximately R18.5 million. Initial indications are that 25% of the store interior suffered fire damage whilst the entire store has been damaged by smoke and water.
According to Leroni, Game and centre management were meeting with the Ekurhuleni fire services at 8:00 this morning to determine whether the store was safe to enable investigation, led by the Ekurhuleni fire department, into the cause of the fire. Game management addressed staff at the store this morning and assured them that their security of employment will not be affected by the fire, which will result in the temporary closure of the store.
“Unfortunately the store will be temporarily closed for repairs, but we have already made contingency plans to minimise inconvenience for customers, including setting up an information booth inside the mall and a helpline to re-direct customers to alternative Game stores in the area, the closest of which is Game’s Boksburg store.”
Further information will be released as it becomes available
