Massmart together with the help of its suppliers Oceana Brands and Pioneer Foods have responded to calls for help in Malawi and Mozambique with food donations.
The South African Defence Force (SANDF) and Gift of the Givers will help deliver 4.6 tons of Lucky Star pilchards and 209 tons of maize meal to affected areas in Malawi and Mozambique. Malawi is the worst affected of the southeast African countries hit by torrential rain. More than 200 people lost their lives while tens of thousands of people displaced by the worst floods to hit the country in 50 years.
Massmart Group Sustainability Manager Alex Haw says it made sense to combine efforts and provide assistance to people at the times they need it most. “We are committed to making a positive impact in the communities we serve and are delighted that our suppliers share this vision.”
“Lucky Star has partnered with Massmart to donate over 13, 000 cans of Lucky Star pilchards to ‘Gift of the Givers’ for distribution to the flood victims in Malawi. Lucky Star pilchards are a rich source of omega 3-fatty acids and endorsed by The Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa and by Diabetes South Africa. Our donation will make a difference in the lives of the Malawians whose lives have been affected by these devastating floods”, says Lourens De Waal, Managing Director of Lucky Star
Gift of the Givers is in the process of taking delivery of the goods bound for Malawi. It is expected that these will arrive early next week.
